We are honored to announce that Dame Barbara Woodward DCMB OBE, British Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China since February 2015, will be the keynote speaker at YYGS-Beijing on February 3, 2017.
Ambassador Woodward is an alumnus of Yale University, receiving a Master of Arts (MA) in History from St Andrews University in 1983 and an MA in International Relations from Yale in 1990. Ambassador Woodward has extensive experience in diplomacy and has worked on economic and security aspects of foreign policy in China, Russia, the European Union and at the United Nations. For her public service, including for her part in securing the release of two British hostages from Chechnya, she has been awarded some of the highest honors in the United Kingdom.
As Britain’s first female Ambassador to China, Ambassador Woodward has demonstrated a commitment to gender equality. She launched the “Inspiring Women” campaign in China in order to challenge gender stereotypes, expose young women in China to a wide range of career options, and connect them with professional role models.
Ambassador Woodward is also dedicated to other social issues in China and to developing China-UK relations, especially among the younger generation. From 2009-2011, Ambassador Woodward chaired Hua Dan, a social enterprise helping migrant workers in China. She currently serves as Champion of the Generation UK China Network, which aims to grow the number of UK students and young professionals gaining experience in China.
Ambassador Woodward is looking forward to meeting the next class of YYGS-Beijing participants in February and will be imparting knowledge related to her time at Yale, her experience working in international relations and foreign diplomacy, and her current work in China, in particular as it pertains to the next generation of young leaders.
