The Alcoa Foundation and the Yale Young Global Scholars announce the launch of the Yale Young Global Scholars - Alcoa Scholarship, a US$100,000 annual fund that will allow students in China to attend the prestigious Yale Young Global Scholars-Beijing (YYGS-Beijing) Program. The scholarship will provide financial help to high school level students who would otherwise lack the financial means to attend the program, covering all tuition fees and transportation costs.

The Alcoa Foundation invests where Alcoa has a presence to further sustainability and to partner with communities in addressing local needs as they adapt to a rapidly changing world. The Yale Young Global Scholars - Alcoa Scholarship will provide 18 scholarships worth US$100,000 in total, to qualified students who attend high school in China. The scholarship will allow them to attend YYGS-Beijing, a highly selective, immersive 9-day pre-collegiate experience designed to cultivate the next generation of Chinese leaders and China scholars held at Yale Center Beijing from February 3-11, 2017.

Applicants must be high school sophomores (US Grade 10) or juniors (US Grade 11), or the international equivalents. A high level of English language proficiency is vital for YYGS, as students must be able to articulate their thoughts coherently and accurately, as they are expected to conduct sustained, difficult academic work. A strong personal and/or academic interest in China-World relations is also a core component of the program. Applicants from underserved geographies or backgrounds who meet the above qualifications are especially encouraged to apply.

Along with the Yale Young Global Scholars – Qooco Scholarship, announced August 31, half of all admitted students—regardless of country of origin—will receive full-tuition, need-based scholarships to attend the 2017 YYGS-Beijing Program. In addition, students who currently attend high school in China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Myanmar and who demonstrate financial need will also be eligible for a travel grant covering up to 100% of travel costs to and from Beijing. A cornerstone of the YYGS – Alcoa Scholarship is to bridge the inequality gap in access to education and make a difference in the lives of young students in China and around the world.

“YYGS has grown to become the premier academic enrichment and leadership training program for talented high school students from around the world,” said YYGS Executive Director Ted Wittenstein. “We are very honored and excited at the opportunity to announce both Qooco and the Alcoa Foundation as our sponsorship partners this year.”

Students will automatically be considered for both the Qooco and Alcoa Scholarships by completing and submitting the “Scholarship” portion of the application, along with the rest of the application. Completed applications require a resume, school transcript, letter of recommendation, and three short essays. There is no fee to apply. The application deadline is October 24, 2016 at 11:59 PM EST.

Qualified students are urged to apply online at yygsbeijing.yale.edu where more information about the program is also available.
